Understanding Miyuki Bead Sizes: A Visual Comparison for Beaders
If you've ever stood in front of a wall of seed beads (or scrolled through an online bead shop) feeling completely overwhelmed by all the size numbers, you're not alone. In this video, I break down and visually compare Miyuki bead sizes, so you can actually see the size differences side by side and understand what you're working with before you buy.
This isn't a project tutorial, but it's one of the most useful videos on my channel if you're trying to build confidence with reading patterns and shopping for supplies.
Why Bead Sizing Trips People Up
Seed bead sizes are labeled with numbers like 11/0, 8/0, or 15/0, and at first glance, that system doesn't tell you much. To make things more confusing, the numbering works in reverse: a higher number actually means a smaller bead. An 15/0 bead is tiny, while an 8/0 bead is noticeably chunkier.
On top of that, Miyuki makes several different bead shapes (like Delicas, rounds, and cubes) and each shape has its own sizing quirks. Without a visual reference, it's genuinely hard to know what you're going to end up with when you order online.
Why This Video Is So Useful
- Removes the guesswork — seeing the beads laid out side by side (with coins for scale, as shown above) makes the size differences click instantly.
- Helps you shop smarter — once you understand sizing, you can order the right beads the first time instead of guessing and hoping.
- Makes patterns easier to follow — most patterns specify a bead size, and this video helps that information actually mean something to you.
- A great reference to revisit — this is the kind of video you might come back to any time you're trying a new size or shape for the first time.
What's Covered in the Video
This video walks through a clear, visual comparison of different Miyuki bead sizes, including:
- How the size numbering system works (and why bigger numbers mean smaller beads)
- A side-by-side visual comparison of different sizes, so you can see the actual scale
- How bead size affects the finished look and drape of a piece
- Tips for choosing the right size for a given project or pattern
Why This Matters for Your Beading Journey
Once you understand bead sizing, a lot of other things start to click into place. You'll be able to substitute sizes more confidently, understand pattern instructions more easily, and shop for supplies without that nagging uncertainty about what's actually going to show up in the mail.
If you're just starting out with beading, I'd really recommend watching this one early on. It's a small investment of time that pays off in every project you make going forward.
