necklaces made with drilled acorns

Handmade Acorn Necklaces

Acorn necklaces

It is officially fall which means my two-year-old has started gathering acorns like it's her job and I am constantly trying to return them to the streets of Brooklyn or come up with acorn crafts so this weekend we made acorn necklaces. Read on for some tips to make your own.

For this project, you will need the following:

* You only need wire and pliers if you choose to make that style of necklace.

Drilled acorns all ready for crafting

1) Bake your acorns for 1 hour at 250 degrees.

Acorns often have small worms living in them (trust me I have discovered this the hard way) so you need to bake them to make sure nothing will crawl out later. Baking also makes the drilling process easier.

2) Drill holes in the acorns.

Place the acorns on a scrap piece of wood and drill holes through them. If any caps fall off during this process, glue them back on. Make sure you drill plenty of acorn beads to keep around future projects like Thanksgiving decorations and Christmas ornaments.

3) String your new acorn beads.

If you are using the nylon beading cord, you can burn the end to make it easier to thread. My 8-year-old was able to make her necklace with this technique. For my 2-year-old, I gave her a piece of copper wire which made it a lot easier for her to thread the beads and acorns. When she was finished, I made a loop on both ends with my needle nose pliers and tied on pink beading cord to complete the necklace. You could also use fishing line and smaller beads or a needle and thread. There really are so many variations to this project but the most important thing is to have fun and showcase these "treasures" that your little person has taken the time to collect.

Happy Crafting!
